What is the NBDE part II?

The NBDE part II is the second portion of the National Board Dental Exam, usually taken during or just before the dental students final year of dental school. Along with part I of the NBDE and your state or regional licensing exam, this exam helps to satisfy the licensing requirements to become a dentist. For more info on the exam and how to sign up to take it, visit the ADA's NBDE part II webpage.

How long is the NBDE part II exam?

The test is a two day exam. The first day consists of 7 hours of testing with an optional 1 hour lunch break. The first day is broken up into two, 3.5 hour segments each covering 200 questions. The second day is a single 3.5 hour session covering 100 patient case problems.

What subjects are tested on part II of the NBDE?

The first day cosnsist of 400 discipline-based questions. The discipline's tested include the following: Operative Dentistry, Pharmacology, Prosthodontics, Oral and Mixillofacial Surgery / Pain Control, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics, Oral Diagnosis, and Patient Management. Also, about 30% of the questions will relate to the basic sciences.

The second day of the test consists of 100 case-based questions. 70% of the case-based questions with be related to adults and 30% related to children, while at least 15% of these case questions will involve compromised adults or children. Each case will come with a patient's medical and social histories, dental charting, radiographs and possibly photographs of the patient. 10 to 15 questions will accompany each case and will involve the treatment of the patient.

For further details on what exactly is tested on the NBDE part II, refer to the NBDE candidate guide from the ADA.

How do I prepare for part II of the NBDE?

The exam covers most of the material you learn in dental school so make sure you spend plenty of time preparing. You should begin preparing for the exam a few months before the exam. I suggest getting some NBDE study guides to help prepare -- I recommend getting the Dental Decks and also a copy of either Mosby's Review for the NBDE part II, Rudman's National Dental Board Part II, or First Aid for the NBDE part II. Another good guide to consider the kaplan book and Q bank for further preparation. You also should get copies of old released exam to take a few practice tests prior to your exam so you know what to expect.
